If you are getting fingerprint jewellery made, the most important part is the print itself.
A clear print makes a huge difference to how the final piece turns out.
The better the print, the better the engraving. Simple as that.
You do not need anything fancy to get it right at home. Getting a clear fingerprint for engraving at home is easier than most people think.
Step by Step: Getting a Clear Fingerprint at Home
What you will need
You can keep this really simple:
A clean sheet of white paper
A black ink pad or a soft pencil
Tape if you want to keep the paper in place
Your finger
That’s it.
Option 1: Using an Ink Pad (Best Result)
If you can get hold of a basic ink pad, this is the easiest way.
Press your finger lightly onto the ink pad
Make sure the whole fingertip is covered, but not overloaded
Press your finger down onto the paper
You can roll it slightly to capture the full print, just keep it light
Lift straight up
Top tip: Do a few prints and pick the clearest one.
Option 2: Using a Pencil (Works Just as Well)
If you do not have an ink pad, this works surprisingly well.
Shade a small square on paper with a soft pencil
Rub your finger over the graphite
Press your finger onto clean white paper
Lift straight up
It should leave a clear print.
What a Clear Fingerprint for Engraving Looks Like
You are looking for:
Clear lines with no smudging
Good contrast between light and dark
The full shape of the fingertip
If it looks blurry or patchy, just try again. It usually takes a couple of attempts.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
Pressing too hard
Using too much ink
Moving your finger while pressing
Sending a photo that is too dark or low quality
Keep it light and simple.
Taking a Photo of Your Fingerprint
Once you have a good print:
Take the photo in natural light
Keep your camera directly above the print
Make sure it is in focus
Do not use filters
Send the clearest version.
A good fingerprint makes all the difference to the final piece.
If you are not sure if your print will work, just send it over and I will let you know before anything gets engraved.
Better to check first than redo it later.
